Sir James Buchanan, 1st Baron Woolavington, GCVO, JP (1849–1935)
James Buchanan was born in August 1849. He was the third son of Alexander Buchanan and Catherine McLean.
Alexander was the fifth son of John Buchanan , farmer in Bankell.
The family is connected to the Leny Cadet line via Alexander Buchanan, son of John Buchanan, who was the youngest of several brothers. At least two of the brothers emigrated to America.
James was Chairman of James Buchanan Co. Ltd., London.
James was High Sheriff of Sussex in 1910.
James gave generously to charitable and public institutions, the most notable of these being a gift to Middlesex hospital, and funds toward the restoration of George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
He was created Baronet in 1920 and Baron in 1922, when he became known as “The Baron Woolavington.”
He married Anne Pounder and had one daughter, who, in 1922 married Reginald Narcissus MacDonald M.C., Lieutenant in the Scots Guards, son of John MacDonald of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 1922, Reginald took the additional name of Buchanan and the family became known as MacDonald-Buchanan.
