Buchanan-Smith, Sir Walter

Sir Walter Buchanan-Smith (1879-1944)

Sir Walter Buchanan-Smith born 25 May 1879, was the eldest son of James George Smith in Rhu and his wife Christina Laura Buchanan daughter and co-heiress of Walter Buchanan of Shandon, M.P.

He assumed his mother‘s surname as an additional surname. George Smith was the fourth son of William Smith of Carbeth-Guthrie, Lord Provost of Glasgow, and his second wife Sarah Wallis.

William Smith, in turn, was the second son of Archibald Smith of Jordanhill.

The arms shown quarterly, Smith with Buchanan of Shandon.

The Arms: Quarterly, first and fourth, Gules, a chevron Ermine between two crescents in chief and a garb in base Or, all within a bordure invected of the last, a martlet Sable for difference; second and third, Or, a lion rampant Sable armed and langued Gules surmounted of a fess of the third charged with three mullets of the field all within a double tressure flory counterflory of the second.

The Crest: An eagle‘s head erased Proper gorged with a ducal coronet Or.

The Motto: Go forward.
