John Buchanan of Whitby (1810-1873)
These arms are the second matriculation of John Buchanan of Whitby and were granted upon his proving his descent from Buchanan of Milton. The arms supersede the original grant of 1840, ( see page 34 ) are substantially different, and therefore worthy of inclusion.
The Arms: Or, a lion rampant Sable, armed and langued Gules within a double tressure flory counterflory of the second, a bordure invected per pale of the Third and Argent charged with eight crescents counterchanged.
The Crest: A dexter hand Proper holding a ducal cap Purpure turned up Ermine tufted on top with a rose Gules, all within a laurel branch disposed orleways.
The Motto: ‘Audaces Juvo’ ( I assist the bold ).
The arms are recorded in Lyon Register Volume 9, Page 23, 30 October 1872.
These arms are listed on page 180 of ‘Armorial Families’ by Fox-Davies in the name of George Buchanan, Coroner for the Liberty of Whitby and Whitby Strand, born 12 May 1843, being the eldest son of John Buchanan of Whitby and Ann Langbourne.
