Edward Mackenzie Murray-Buchanan of Leny, DL JP (1874-1956)

Edward Mackenzie Murray-Buchanan of Leny, Perthshire D.L. 1925, J.P. 1935, Capt. Black Watch served in World war 1 1914-1919, assumed the additional surname of Buchanan, on succeeding to the estates of Spittal ( which he disposed of ) and Leny by the will of his cousin John Hamilton-Buchanan.

He was born 3 June 1874 educated Rugby and Oriel College Oxford B.A. He married 9 October 1913 Jean Isabella Shaw youngest daughter of James Carmichael of Arthurstone Perthshire.

The couple have issue:
1. Euphemia Cecilia- b. 1915 – m. 24 April 1940 Major Francis William Murray Clark, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, of Ulva Argylshire, only son of F. W. Clark. The couple have issue, Francis Malcolm b. 22 June 1942
2. Margaret Avril b. 1917 m. 16 June 1946 Alfred Fairfield
3. Phoebe Aronie b. 1923.

The Arms: Quarterly, first and fourth, Or, a lion rampant Gules armed and langued Gules within a double tressure flory counterflory Sable; ( for Buchanan ) Second, Sable, a chevron between three bear’s heads couped Argent, muzzled Gules; ( for Leny ) Third, Azure, three mullets Argent, in the fess point a cross of the second surmounted of a saltire Gules and in chief a crescent Or. ( for Murray of Lintrose )

The Crests:
1. dexter, a sword erect in pale Proper, hilted and pommelled Or;
2. sinister, an olive branch fructed Proper

Mantling: dexter – Gules doubled Or sinister – Azure double Argent

The Mottoes:
‘VIRTUTE GLADII PARAVI’ – ‘EX BELLO QUIES’
Below the shield the Motto – ‘NOBILIS EST IRA LEONIS’
