George James Ferguson-Buchanan of Auchentorlie (1862-1928)
George James Ferguson-Buchanan (formerly George James Ferguson) of Auchentorlie was Justice of the Peace for Co. Dumbarton, late Major and Hon. Lt. Col. of the 3rd Battalion of the Scots Fusiliers, formerly A.D.C. to the Governor of Bombay, Major Army Reserve, served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers in South Africa, Member of the Royal Company of Archers.
George assumed in 1890 the additional name Buchanan on succeeding to Auchentorlie.
The property of Auchentorlie devolved on Andrew Buchanan, the brother of Georgina Grace Buchanan. Upon the death of Andrew (dec. 1886) the property was conveyed to Richard Dennistoun Buchanan, his brother, in life rent. Upon the death of Richard, to a series of his heirs, and that whoever should succeed in virtue of the provisions contained in the Trust Disposition and Settlement, should be bound and obliged to assume and constantly use and retain the surname Buchanan, and arms and designation of Buchanan of Auchentorlie in all times coming after their succession, as their proper surname, Arms, and Designation.
In the course of time, the succession opened to George James Ferguson, who complied with the obligations contained therein and assumed the name of Buchanan in addition to, and after the name Ferguson.
The Arms are those of Ferguson of Kilkerran (recorded 1719) and Andrew Buchanan of Ardenconnel (recorded 1791).
The petition of James Ferguson-Buchanan asks that, in further implementation of the said trust, disposition and settlement, that the arms of Buchanan might be matriculated of new, quarterly with his paternal arms.
